On the morning of June 29, 2019, the first Shanghai Ocean Conference was held in the History Hall of Xuhui campus by SJTU-SOO. Facing serious global warming, experts were cordially invited to SJTU-SOO to take part in this interdisciplinary workshop for multi-subject joint development: Interactions between Oceanic Physical, Chemical, Biological Processes and Climate Change.

More than 40 experts and scholars from both national and international fields of marine science and technology gathered in Shanghai to discuss the bright future of oceanography. Attendees included: Zhongqin Lin, President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University; Jilan Su, a dual academician of Shanghai Jiao Tong University; Professor Meng Zhou, Dean of the School of Oceanography; Academician Dake Chen, Co-Dean of the School of Oceanography; Shijun Liao, Dean of the Shipbuilding Institute; Qinyu Liu, Professor at Ocean University of China; Xie Shangping, Professor at Scripps Institute of UCSD; Qiao Fangli, Secretary of the First Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources; Du Yan, Deputy Director of the South China Sea Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Wang Chunzai, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Tropical Marine Environment; Liu Zhengyu, Professor at Ohio State University; Zhang Shuwen, Dean of School of Oceanography, Guangdong Ocean University, etc.

President Zhongqin Lin talked about the history of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the history of Marine science. He said that the 21st century is the century of the ocean, protecting the Marine environment, developing Marine resources and safeguarding China's maritime rights and interests has become a major national development strategy. This conference was named "Siyuan", which is of great significance. He hopes that this conference can become an excellent platform for academic exchanges between domestic and foreign experts and young scholars, hold BBS regularly, and finally make Shanghai ocean conference a high-level, authoritative and internationally influential conference.

Dean Zhou Meng said that "Siyuan is never forget why you started", it means sticking to scientific research, natural curiosity, problem solving .Therefore, Shanghai Ocean Conference is a free expression of scientific problems. It is a court of science and is the free exchange place of information and presentation.

Keynote report was hosted by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University professor Ma Jian. Professor Shangping Xie and Fangli Qiao made precise exquisite speeches “the Multidecadal Modulations of Key Metrics of Global Climate Change” and “Set up the mode of new type of Marine, Typhoon and Climate “ respectively, which both triggered a heated discussion.

On the morning of June 30, the first Shanghai Ocean Conference was successfully concluded. School of oceanography of Shanghai Jiao Tong University will continue to make contributions to the Marine cause of China and the world with the inspiration of "Never forget the source of water".
