She received a B.S. and a M.S in geology and sedimentology at Chengdu University of Technology in 1990 and 1993, respectively. In 2001 she completed a doctorate in Marine Geology (Ph.D.) at Zhejiang University.

Since 1993 she has been working at the Second Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration/Ministry of Natural Resources (Full Professor since 2003). During 2002-2005, she spent 2 years at GEOMAR-Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Germany as a visiting scientist and post-doctoral researcher. During 2008-2009 she spent 6 months at Oregon State University, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Montana State University as a visiting scientist. Since 2015, she served as a Vice Dean of the College Ocean Science, Zhejiang University. Since 2019, as a joint appointed professor of the School of Oceanology, Shanghai Jiaotong University.

Xiqiu Han is a marine geologist. Her research interests are in deep-sea mineral resources and their associated geological systems. Over the course of her career, she has been studying cold seep carbonates, Fe-Mn nodules, Co-rich crusts and hydrothermal sulfides in tectonic regimes that vary from continental margin to mid-ocean ridge settings. Her expertise is mineralogy, petrology, sedimentology, geochemistry and geomicrobiology. Gas hydrate and cold seep system, black smoker and hydrothermal system, magmatic processes along mid-ocean ridges, mineralization processes and elemental cycles, microbe-mineral interaction, past environmental records and global climate changes have been her research focus. She has been involved in 19 oceanographic expeditions (including submersible dives and 5 international cruises) and in 2007 she became the first female Chief Scientist in China. To date, she has led 11 cruises as chief scientist and/or principal investigator and discovered 12 hydrothermal sites along Southwest Indian Ridge and the Carlsberg Ridge in the Indian Ocean.
