Shanghai Jiao Tong University is one of the most prestigious Universities in China among the world’s top 100 universities. Through its 128-year history, the university has kept its strategic vision on education, science, technology and innovation. Under this vision, the Institute of Oceanography in SJTU was established in 2013, and then transformed to the School of Oceanography in 2018 with the mission goals to conduct basic research in ocean science and technology, to seek solutions for environment protection, ecosystem conservation and climate change mitigation, and to serve the public, nation and global communities. The School of Oceanography is a joint venture between Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Ministry of Nature Resources Second Institute of Oceanography and the Ministry of Nature Resources Polar Research Institute of China.
The School of Oceanography offers Bachelor's, Master's and PhD degree programs in ocean science. The School currently has around 120 faculty and staff members, and is enrolled approximately 150 and 300 undergraduate and graduate students respectively. It possesses the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory for Polar Ecosystem and Climate Change, Shanghai Key Laboratory for Polar Life and Environment, and Shanghai Frontiers Science Center Of Polar Science. The School has received a number of international research and educational projects in collaboration with institutions around the world, engaging in a wide range of research activities from wetlands to deep ocean trenches, spanning from equatorial to polar regions. The School of Oceanography has been ranked as A+ consistently by Times Higher Education, and Top 3 among Chinese universities in the national ranking. As a young school, the School of Oceanography is steadily advancing towards excellences in education, research and service.
